Context and Mission
The Québec Forest Industry Council (QFIC) was founded following the pooling of the activities of three previously distinct associations: the Québec Forest Industries Association (QFIA), the Québec Hardwood Lumber and Veneer Association (QHLVA) and the Quebec Lumber Manufacturers Association QLMA).
Since January 2003, most of the lumber manufacturing and pulp and paper manufacturing companies active in Québec have merged into a single entity, the QFIC. In 2004, the Québec Hardwood Lumber and Veneer Association (QHLVA) hasjoined them, making the new QFIC a major force to reckon with in this core sector of the economy of Québec and of the outlying regions in particular.
As a result, the QFIC has become the leading advocate for Québec's forest industry. It is thus destined to represent the great majority of softwood lumber, veneer, pulp and paper, cardboard, and panel companies. The Council is dedicated to: defending the interests of these companies; making known their contribution to socioeconomic development; ensuring the integrated management and sustainable development of forests; and achieving optimal use of natural resources.
The Council is the voice of Québec's forest industry. It represents the vast majority of softwood and hardwood lumber, veneer, pulp, paper, cardboard and panel companies in Québec. It champions the interests of these enterprises and encourages their contribution to socio-economic development, the integrated and sustainable management of forests and the optimal use of natural resources. The Council works with government authorities, public and parapublic bodies, organizations and the general public. It strives to foster responsible behaviour from its members with regard to the environmental, economic and social aspects of their activities.
